Is TinyRecorder free?
Yes. It's free software under the AGPL-3.0 license. There's no account, no ads and no watermark.
Why does macOS warn me when I open it the first time?
TinyRecorder is not notarized by Apple, so macOS blocks the first launch of a downloaded copy once. On macOS 15 and later, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway; on macOS 12–14, right-click the app and choose Open. The one-line Terminal install avoids the warning, and in-app updates never show it.
Which permissions does it need?
Screen Recording is required for recording screens, windows, apps and system audio. Microphone is only needed for your voice, and Camera only for the camera overlay, Presenter Overlay and recording an iPhone or iPad.
The permission guide keeps appearing after an update. What do I do?
Since version 1.7.15, updates keep the permission, so this normally only happens when updating from an older version. macOS ties the permission to the app's signature, and that changed. Fix it in one of these ways:
  • In the permission guide, click Reset Permission & Relaunch, then grant the permission again.
  • Open Preferences → General → Permissions → Repair Screen Recording Permission.
  • Quit TinyRecorder, run tccutil reset ScreenCapture com.33to9.TinyRecorder in Terminal, reopen the app and grant the permission again.
How do I update?
Use Check for Updates… in the app. It can also check and download updates automatically; you can turn that off in Preferences.
How do I record my iPhone or iPad?
Connect the device with a USB cable, unlock it and tap Trust if asked. In the recording toolbar, click Mobile Device, optionally turn on Mute and choose a Preset, then click the device name. If the device isn't listed, reconnect the cable, make sure it's unlocked and that TinyRecorder has the Camera permission.
How is TinyRecorder related to QuickRecorder?
TinyRecorder is a community fork of QuickRecorder by lihaoyun6, which has been inactive since mid-2025. The fork focuses on compatibility with the latest macOS releases — starting with macOS 27, where the menu bar stop, pause and camera buttons stopped responding — and adds things like a first-launch guide and installer options. It is not an official QuickRecorder release.
Is it on the Mac App Store?
No. TinyRecorder is distributed through GitHub Releases, Homebrew and the install script only.
Which languages does the app support?
The app follows your Mac's language when a translation is available and falls back to English. You can also choose a language in Preferences; the change applies after a restart.
Where do I report a bug or request a feature?
Open an issue on GitHub. Your macOS version, the TinyRecorder version and a screenshot help a lot.
